Student questions are the
seeds of real learning.
Our schools need to be places that set our kids’ hearts on fire; that they can figure out what they are passionate about, where we give them opportunities to pursue it, and that we can give them a place to make a difference now. ~ Shelley Wright
“The true utility of imagination [education] is measured not by some ratio of innovations-per-ideation. It is best measured by whether the ecosystem as a whole is richer in possibility, and whether the society we feed with our imagination enables all participants in the market or the community to participate to their fullest potential.” Eric Liu (2016) makes this statement in his book, Imagination First, about the role of creativity in contemporary society. I believe his words would ring just as true if they began with, “The true utility of education...”.
For me, teaching is the ultimate act of creativity. It involves binging many disparate elements together to solve problems in the most efficient and elegant way possible. The best learning takes an aesthetic (sensory) experience, reflects on it, and transforms it into something new: new knowledge, new relationship, new identity, ...the possibilities are limitless!
